CONTRACTS & MANAGEMENT
GENERAL TIPS
Listed are helpful tips to ensure your construction project is run on budget and on schedule.
1
Don't allow construction workers to live on-site.
2
Include additional measures in your construction contract that establish clear rules and penalties for failure to comply.
3
Hire a project manager with no conflict of interest to provide proper oversight, especially if you will be absent.
SOLID WASTE
Ensure solid waste from construction is disposed of properly.
1
Require separation of construction waste and regular disposal.
2
Ensure no trash is burned on-site or sent to illegal dumps.
3
Require a thorough post-construction clean up of trash and cement from the site and surround area.
NOISE & LIGHT POLLUTION
Take into consideration how your construction project affects surrounding wildlife. Reduce noise and light pollution to reduce your impact on surrounding wildlife and ecosystems.
1
Restrict noise and lighting before 7am and after 5pm.
2
Restrict or forbid construction work during the weekend.
WATER CONSUMPTION & POLLUTION
During you construction project plan to minimize water consumption and pollution generated by construction.
1
Start building in the rainy season to save water usually used to cool concrete in the dry season.
2
Install a portable toilet or pre-built wastewater system for workers to use.
3
Bury mesh fencing around the construction site to contain soil and construction waste.
4
Fill your pool with water brought in by a truck to avoid interrupting the local water supply.
BUILDER TIP
Construction in the area can create a disturbance to neighbors and local wildlife for up to 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, while generating substantial solid waste and water pollution.
BUILDER TIP
To cut costs and increase profit margins, many contractors are violating the law and are not taking the garbage to the legal dumps in Santa Cruz and Miramar. To save money these contractors are hiring unlicensed transportation companies to dump the construction garbage at 1 of 5 illegal dumps in the Nosara vicinity. The garbage is then set on fire. These dumps are near homes, schools, the Nosara River and the wildlife refuge, and pollutes the air, water, the fish in the water, the animals in our area, and aquifer that feeds our homes. All contractors claim to be doing the right thing. Most of them are not being honest.
